Become a referee

Committed, knowledgeable and well-trained referees are an essential part of soccer. Becoming a referee is an opportunity to earn a decent wage, understand the game from a different perspective, maintain a healthy lifestyle and making life-long friends. A referee’s journey begins at the Grassroots level. U.S. Soccer Grassroots Referees are qualified to officiate competitive, small-sided or recreational youth matches and amateur adult matches. The U.S. Soccer Grassroots License has both an online and in-person component. Grassroots Referees will register for courses and be certified through State Referee Committees.

Even though BRSC is an affiliate of South Carolina Youth Soccer, referee courses are governed by US Soccer. This means someone interested in becoming a referee can register and take a course wherever it is most convenient to them. There are numerous courses taught in the Savannah area as well as the Charleston area. Below are links to the Referee Course pages of both Georgia Youth Soccer and South Carolina Youth Soccer. Both sites explain the process of becoming a soccer referee and list the courses available.

THE PROCESS IN A NUTSHELL

1. Create Your Profile.  To become a referee or a coach, you must first create a profile in US Soccer's Learning Center.
2. Find and Register for Your Course.  Once you have created your profile, you can search for a FIRST TIME GRASSROOTS REFEREE COURSE convenient to you.
3. Complete the Coursework.  The course consists of an on-line component and an in-person session with the State Association (SCYS or GA Soccer) hosting the course.
4. Receive Your License.   The State Association will issue your license. It will appear in your US Soccer Learning Center Profile.
5. Check the Mail for Your Badge, Order your Uniform and Connect with the Local Referee Assignor!
